As planned, I have decided to form my own colour/ emotion playlist to relate colours to and form my own visual responses much like Chromathesia. Using the range of colours (seen above) from my initial colour and music research, I picked 3 colours to associate with each song with which I felt reflected the mood of the music.
My own playlist
I initially started to get the music from the creative commons section on SoundCloud, as I thought if I did want to use these pieces of music in the game, then I would be able to do so with the music being free to use. Also by using creative commons music, I thought I wouldn’t know the music or have heard the artists before. Therefore I felt my colour choices and the drawings I did wouldn’t be altered by how I felt about the artists or their previous songs. Ensuring the responses are accurate and not bias.
When I went through the creative commons music, I found it difficult to find music with a range of different colours and mood to them. So to solve this, I did start using any music off of SoundCloud simply to get that variety of colour, emotions and shapes. To show the differences between the different music emotions and what colour and shapes I associated with them.
Thoughts
- Found the work above to be a fun and innovative way of responding to the the topic of colour, music, and emotions. Due to the expressive nature of the drawings, in particular, allowing me to be very bold and actually be creative, rather than highlighting text.
- However
Audio Visualiser – Bass Shapes
Simply searching Chromathesia I discovered this audio visualiser and though I didn’t want to look into them due to them being unoriginal and explored a lot by others, I thought I would place this into my research because it isn’t like a traditional visualiser in the fact that colour or shapes come onto the screen in a flat 2D way, this visualiser creates a journey and makes it feel like you are moving through a world, due to the depth created in the design.
Thoughts
- Looking at the video, I felt it could be a way of utilising the drawings I have down above into a digital format. The video itself even has a game feel to it, by the wheel navigating through a space and hitting the shapes to the beat of the music, which could be put into a rhythm game simply, by having the user control the navigation of the wheel and try to hit the shapes to the beat of the music to gain a score. So this brings up the option of my project moving more towards a rhythm game.
Plan
- Continue looking into different shapes which are associated with colour – Expand my research out further before narrowing it down – Use Pinterest – Find Artists – Search more into colour mapping.
